Hospital Entrance
Welcome to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, home to The Family Birthplace - the most innovative high-risk obstetrics program in St. Louis. The goal of The Family Birthplace is to help bring a healthy baby into the world and make the experience as special, memorable and safe as possible. SSM Health St. Mary’s is also the headquarters for the Saint Louis University School of Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Family Waiting Room
Grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles – your baby has so many special people to meet! We keep them close and comfortable in our family waiting room, with free Wi-Fi, flat screen TV’s and space for relaxing. We also offer 24-hour visitor access with the patient’s consent.
Nurses' Station
Upon your arrival to The Family Birthplace at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, you will be greeted by our compassionate team of nurses. Our team of experienced and caring nurses continually monitor the progress of mom and baby throughout the labor and delivery process.
Perinatal Special Care Unit
In the event you and your baby need extra care during your pregnancy, the perinatal special care unit at SSM Health St. Mary's will care for mom and baby on a long-term basis. Our staff is here to monitor mom and baby if one or both of them are high-risk.
Women's Evaluation Unit
The Women’s Evaluation Unit at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital provides comfort, convenience and care for moms-to-be in a spa-like environment. This unit is a pre-admission area for pregnant women and allows those in an emergency situation or with sudden concerns about their pregnancy to bypass the traditional emergency room and receive immediate care from obstetric physicians.
Maternal Transport Team
The SSM Health Maternal Care Transport Team is the most experienced in the region, serving Metro St. Louis, Metro East and the surrounding area since 2007. Our highly trained nurses are experts in taking care of pregnant moms before, during and after transport.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine
If your OB physician determines you and your baby are in need of a higher level of care during your pregnancy, SSM Health and the SLUCare Physician Group offer expertise in high-risk care for maternal and fetal conditions. The team is led by physicians and nurse practitioners and consist of highly-skilled and experienced nurses, Fetal Evaluation Ultrasound Team, Genetic Counselors and Diabetes Educators in our Maternal & Fetal Care Center at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital.
The Maternal & Fetal Care Center, a service of SSM Health Women’s Health and SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital, is also a training center for the Saint Louis University School of Medicine Obstetrics Residency program and Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program.
The St. Louis Fetal Care Institute
The SSM Health St. Louis Fetal Care Institute at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital offers a variety of fetal diagnostic procedures, interventions and treatments for various fetal conditions. SSM Health Cardinal Glennon is home to the SSM Health St. Louis Fetal Care Institute and is a collaborative program between SSM Health Cardinal Glennon, SSM Health St. Mary’s and SLUCare Physician Group.Childbirth Classes

Labor and Delivery Room
Having a baby is an exciting, miraculous journey of love! Our private labor and delivery rooms offer all the amenities of home for you and your loved ones. This room is where you and your baby will spend your first moments together, bonding skin-to-skin. Our team of experienced doctors and nurses are with mothers every step of the way.
Customized birthing experience
Our team is dedicated to providing you the best possible experience during your labor and delivery journey. Whether it is the presence of a laboring tub, birthing ball or a doula, we will work with you to customize your birthing experience.Low C-section rates
At SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, we believe in giving mothers the time and support they need to have a healthy, natural delivery. We do not put time limits on deliveries, avoid unnecessary elective inductions and follow the most progressive standards for labor and delivery. As a result, SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital has one of the lowest C-section rates in the country for low-risk, first-time mothers at just 12 percent.
Recovery and Postpartum Room
After your baby is born and you've had time to recover, you'll move to a comfortable, spa-like private room. We practice mom/baby rooming-in, which is a healthy choice for families as it lets you care for your new baby while our nurses are close by to help when needed. This will help you feel more comfortable taking care of your baby once you go home.
Breastfeeding support
Our specialized team of lactation consultants are here seven days a week and are here to assist with education, training and support for new moms. Additionally, our mother/baby nursing staff have received training to make breastfeeding your infant successful.Security
Safety is an important part of healthcare. The Family Birthplace unit has security measures in place to protect you and your baby. So you can sleep like a baby – with your baby – safe and sound.
NICU
For babies with health concerns, our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit specializes in care for mothers and babies before and after birth. At SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, newborns that need extra care receive advanced, intensive care around-the-clock by a team of NICU nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists and SLUCare Physician Group Neonatologists.
Our connection to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital gives you access to leading pediatric specialists around the clock should your baby need it. As a Level IV NICU (the highest level of designation), our doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses and specialists are available 24/7 to provide the highest level of care for the most complex diagnoses.
