Staying active while in labor can enhance progress and help ease pain. Changing positions often also helps labor to progress. For pain control needs, anesthesia is available 24-hours a day.
The physicians, midwives and nursing staff at WakeMed are committed to supporting mothers in active labor, ensuring that the care and treatment of the mother during labor (i.e. movements and positioning) help support a natural birth.
State-of-the-art equipment and monitoring is available in every room. Moms will also receive a tablet to use throughout the hospital stay to follow your care and your baby’s care. You will have access to your vital signs, medications, test results, and more.
Post-Partum Suite
After giving birth, a mother will move with her baby to a postpartum suite, where your spouse and children may stay with you during your hospital stay. The average stay after a normal delivery is one to two days, while moms who have had a Cesarean birth may stay three to four days.
To celebrate the birth of your baby, we will offer a celebratory toast with sparkling cider and cake. In addition, the hospital will provide diapers, wipes, T-shirts, blankets and other baby care products to use while you are here. Additionally, we offer an on-site newborn photographer, if you choose to take advantage of this service.

As part of the discharge process, caregivers will perform a car seat check to ensure the straps of the seat are adjusted correctly and that the seat is properly installed in the vehicle.
Comfortable accommodations are provided so mom’s support person can be a partner in care 24/7.
At WakeMed, we encourage mothers to keep their babies in the room with them. In fact, studies have shown that moms get more sleep when their babies are not taken to the nursery at night.
We are also a breastfeeding-friendly hospital, and our nurses and certified lactation consultants are ready to help you get a great start with breast or bottle feeding depending on mom’s preference.
